EUGENE® Malaria Pf/Pv Antigen Rapid Test is a lateral flow immunochromatographic assay for the qualitative simultaneous detection of Malaria P.falciparum specific histidine rich protein-2(Pf HRP-2) and Malaria P.vivax specific lactate dehydrogenase Pv-LDH in human whole blood as an aid in the diagnosis of Malaria infection. The test is recommended for professional use only. All results must be interpreted together with other clinical information available to the physicians.

Principle

Malaria is a serious parasitic disease characterized by fever, chills, and anemia and is caused by a parasite that is transmitted from one human to another by the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. There are five species of Plasmodium can infect and be transmitted by humans. Severe disease is largely caused by Plasmodium falciparum while the disease caused by Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale1, and Plasmodium malariae is generally a milder disease that is rarely fatal. Plasmodium knowlesi is a zoonosis that causes malaria in macaques but can also infect humans.2,3 In humans, the parasites (called sporozoites) migrate to the liver where they mature and release another form, the merozoites. The disease now occurs in more than 90 countries worldwide, and it is estimated that there are over 225 million clinical cases and 78,1000 malaria-caused deaths per year.4 At the present, malaria is diagnosed by looking for the parasites in a drop of blood. Blood will be put onto a microscope slide and stained so that the parasites will be visible under a microscope.

EUGENE® Malaria Pf/Pv Antigen Rapid Test detects Malaria P.falciparum specific histidine rich protein-2(Pf HRP-2) and Malaria P.vivax specific lactate dehydrogenase Pv-LDH released during plasmodium infection. It can be performed easily without extra laboratory equipment and it can also be used to monitor the treatment of anti-malaria since that the LDH is undetectable 2 weeks after the elimination of the protozoa.
